How to Get More Book Reviews with KDP Select & Book Bounty

Reviews are the lifeblood of a book! They provide social proof that convinces prospective buyers that your book is worth reading. But obtaining reviews is the bane of many authors’ existence, and there are many strategies out there that teach self-publishing authors how to get more reviews on their book.

This is one of them. Any strategy is to be used at your own risk, but I’ve personally used it to get reviews on my own books, with great results. Many Starling Publishing clients also use this strategy.

This short guide shows you how to combine KDP Select’s free promotion days with Book Bounty, a paid subscription service that helps authors get reviews, to quickly build reviews and visibility for your book.

KDP Select is only available to authors who agree to make their ebook exclusive to Amazon for a given 90-day enrollment period. If you’re using an Amazon free ISBN, this strategy is perfect for you.

Step 1: Join Book Bounty

- Go to Book Bounty.
- Create your account.
- Earn bounty points by reviewing other people’s books. Start early and save as many as you can! You’ll use these points to get reviews for your own book later.

Step 2: Add Your Book to Book Bounty

- In your account, go to My Books → click + New Book.
- Fill in the details:
  • Book Type: Choose any type, but make sure at least one option is “Verified Purchase.”
  • ASIN Number: Copy this from your KDP Dashboard (see screenshot for where to find it).

  • Upload Your eBook Cover.
  • Select Genre and Language.
  • Paste your Amazon Book Description or Back Cover Copy.
- Click Submit for Approval.

Step 3: Make Sure You’re Enrolled in KDP Select

- In your KDP Dashboard, click on your Kindle eBook.
- Under “Kindle eBook Actions,” select Enroll in KDP Select (if you haven’t already).
- Confirm the 90-day enrollment.
- Enrollment in KDP Select is what gives you access to Free Book Promotions.

Step 4: Schedule Your Free Promotion

1. In your KDP Dashboard, click Marketing from the top menu.
2. Scroll down to Run a Price Promotion.
3. Select Free Book Promotion and click Create a Free Book Promotion.
4. In the popup, choose the title you want and click Continue.
5. On the Edit Free Book Deal page:
   • Pick your start date on the calendar.
   • Pick your end date (up to 5 days per 90-day enrollment).
   • Best practice: use 2–3 days so you can run two separate promos in the same term.

Step 5: Launch Your Review Bounty on Book Bounty

- Early on the first day of your KDP free promotion, head back to Book Bounty.
- In My Books, click Start a Review Bounty.
- Fill out the fields:
  • Turnaround Time (how quickly you want reviews back).
  • Bounty Marketplace (optional).
  • Bounty Type → set this to Verified Purchase.
  • Click Free Promotion.
  • Choose your Start and End Dates (same as your KDP promo).
- Click Send Bounty.

That’s it — your book is now set up to receive reviews while it’s free on Amazon!

✓ Front-load downloads: Get as many downloads as possible on Day 1 to boost your free-store ranking.
✓ Stack promos: Pair BookBounty with free book newsletters (e.g., Freebooksy, BookRaid).
✓ Rinse and repeat: You get 5 days per 90-day enrollment — use them wisely.
